The deal: in this land, every once in a while, a girl is born with purple eyes...and when that happens, she is believed to be an avatar of the Goddess. And, since their deity is renowned for her girth and appetite, the best way to make sure their prayers are granted is to keep her avatar well-fed. So, there's usually a constant stream of pilgrims bringing edible offerings to the current chosen one.
