There are five main types of carpet cleaning: Shampooing, Dry Cleaning, Foam Cleaning, Bonnet Cleaning, and Steam Cleaning. The worst method is shampooing. Detergents are applied to the carpet and agitated with a machine. The shampoo is then extracted from the carpet by vacuuming. The detergents used contain brighteners and deodorizers that leave your carpet looking nice and smelling good. However, most of the dirt stays in the carpet and reappear after the shampoo's effect has worn off. Dry cleaning is performed by applying a special dirt attracting powder to the carpet and worked in. Then using a vacuum it is sucked up leaving the carpets looking clean, however much of the dirty powder is not vacuumed up and is left deep down in the carpet. Foam carpet cleaning method is a cross between shampooing and dry cleaning. It uses a minimal amount of water and foam detergent that attracts and adheres to the soil. After the foam is worked into the carpet, it is then vacuumed, extracting most of the water, detergent, and dirt. However again a residue is left behind. Bonnet cleaning is usually reserved for commercial applications because the aggressive nature of the rotary machine can damage residential carpets. Bonnet carpet cleaning is performed by applying a detergent to the carpet and using an absorbent pad on a rotary shampoo machine to extract soil. Heavy duty truck mounted steam cleaning is the best method for cleaning carpets. A powerful machine mounted inside a van or trailer generates high pressure steam water and incredibly strong suction both of which are piped into your home using flexible lines. The benefit of the truck mounted system is constant flow of hot water, this can not be achieved with a portable type system. Typically a prespray is applied to the carpet and allowed to dwell, loosening the soil. Then using a wand a hot high pressure solution is shot into the carpet while simultaneously being sucked out of the home and into storage tanks outside leaving your carpeting clean and residue free. It can take 3-6 hours for the carpet to dry but this wont harm it or you.
